Windmill/River
Tillingham
To our right
is the only remaining Rye Windmill and in front of us is the River
Tillingham. One can now see where E.F.Benson got his name of Tilling
for his Mapp and Lucia Books. Behind us is the Deals, which Houses
the local information Centre, and old Warehouses which have been
converted into various retail outlets.

If we
now walk along the road opposite we come to the junction of
Wish Ward, The Mint and Mermaid Street. To get a complete
tour the next road to traverse is The Mint if we go up there
to our next road on the right which is West Street, This street
is cobbled and if we go up here right at the end is Lamb House.

Lamb
House
Just before
Lamb House on our right is Mermaid Street this is probably
the most Famous Street in Rye if we go down Mermaid Street
you will find The Mermaid Hotel on the right. In the novels
by Malcolm Saville this was the Gay Dolphin and in the Pugwash
Books by John Ryan this is Merriemaid Street. In this street
we have various houses named after their old uses The Old
Hospital, Jeakes House.etc. As we walk down Mermaid Street
very near the bottom is a passage, which we will walk up this,
takes us to Watch Bell Street here you will find the Hope
Anchor Inn and opposite one can see in the distance Rye's
sister Town of Winchelsea and Rye's third River the River
Brede.

Watchbell
Street/Church Square
If we walk up
Watchbell Street we come to Church Square here we have another land
mark building called St Anthony's if we go left here to the next
turning and just look left the next house we see has a very crooked
chimney. We now walk along the path to our right, which will take
us to the main entrance to the church if we now go left we will
walk past Simon the Pieman and Fletchers House.
